To become a nurse in UK Ⅰ / 영국간호사되기

This post is for nurses in the world, especially for Korean nurses who really want to go abroad. I am currently working in London and I would love to share my experience in terms of how to apply UK visa as a nurse.

Since I used to work in IRELAND and I am currently preparing for US, I will keep you update about it!

There are several steps that you need to complete in order to work as a nurse in UK, but It is not a rocket science. I did it, and of course, you can do it.

저는 아일랜드에서도 일 했었고, 미국간호사도 준비중이기 때문에 관련된 포스팅 계속하겠습니다. 영국간호사가 되기위해서는여러가지 단계가 있는데 시간이 좀 걸릴 뿐 불가능한것도 아닙니다!

That is one of the uniforms for UKRN; to be honest, it doesn’t really look cool. ;P

It’s a bit different from USA nurse-processing. Simply, you need to submit documents first for USA such as graduation certificate and nursing licence etc. UK, However, requires first IELTS or OET as part of English requirement.

미국간호사 준비과정 또 조금 다른데요 . 간단히 말해서 미국은 서류가 먼저라면 영국은 영어시험이 먼저입니다 .

Let’s simplify.

1. IELTS or OET (Occupational English Test)

In my group in which there were all new (nurses) starters from different countries, everyone did OET, except me. Apparently, OET is far easier than IETLS.

2. CBT (computer based test) – roughly similar to N-CLEX

3. Documents like evidences of diploma, licence and TB certificate

Then you can choose whether taking OSCE on your own or Getting a job first. Getting a job is a definitely easier way since hospitals(mostly public) in UK usually support visa and provide training for OSCE.

4. Getting a job and visa, it is possible thanks to an interview via Skype.

5. OSCE: many hospitals provide training for OSCE meanwhile you work as a HCA(health care assistance). You can come to UK with really minimum budget as they support also accommodation for first 2 months.

간략히 설명하자면,

1. IELTS or OET 같이 시작한 동료들을 보니 정말 하나 같이 다 OET를 쳤더라구요. 병원에서 만난 한국 간호사선생님들도 아예 공부를 외국에서 하셨거나 아니면 OET를 치셨어요. 듣기로는 OET가 한결 낫다고 합니다. 저는 석사공부를 하고 싶어서 시간이 걸리더라도 IELTS를 고집했어요. 다만, academic IELTS for UKVI로 치셔야해요. 저는모르고 그냥 academic IELTS치고 냈다가 비자 비용도 날리고 시간도 버리고 시험도 또 치고..

2. CBT, 컴퓨터로 치는 시험입니다. NCLEX랑 비슷하고 영국 간호윤리를 중요시 합니다. 전세계에서 가능하고 정해진 시험센터에 가서 치면 됩니다.

3. 서류준비, 한국 간호사 면허증과 대학교 졸업증명서 등등을 제출하면 됩니다. 제가 준비할 때는 대학교와 간호부에서 직접 우편으로 보냈어야했는데 지금은 인터넷으로 가능하다고 합니다. 미국간호사랑 비교했을 때 영국이 훨씬 빠른거 같아요 .

4. OSCE를 혼자 준비할지 취업을 먼저 할지 결정해야 합니다. 개인적으로, 취업 먼저하기를 적극 추천합니다. 인터뷰는 스카이프로 가능합니다.

5. 영국의 많은 병원들이 OSCE(실기시험정도?) 트레이닝을 제공하고 동시에 조무사로써 일할 수 있도록 해줍니다. 동시에 월급도 주고 처음 2개월의 숙소도 무료로 제공되기 때문에 취업을 먼저하는 것이 더 나은 것 같아요. 동시에, 병원 분위기도 익히고 시험 정보도 많이 얻구요 .

Unfortunately, you have to pay a certain amount of money for each step. For instance, 200£ for IETLS, appx.140£ for registration and so on. Having said that, once you get a nursing licence, aka, pin number, the hospital which supported your visa and where you are going to work will pay you back.
